Switching a bowling green is a vital part of maintaining the quality and playability of the surface.
Why Do We Switch?
There are a few key reasons why switching a bowling green is essential:
-
Dew Removal
- If it's been a warm night or you've had a bit of rain we get dew forming on the grass plant. Dew might seem harmless, but it can actually lead to or encourage certain types of diseases on a bowling green, we want to remove that dew to keep the turf healthy. If bowlers come down first thing in the morning they certainly don't want to be playing on a wet, damp green. A nice dry surface is what they’re looking for.
-
Worm Casts
- Another reason we switch is to deal with the formation of worm casts. Only certain types of worms create these mounds of soil, sand and dead organic material on the surface. We want to remove these to ensure we have a clean, smooth surface for cutting and playing. No one wants to bowl over a worm cast, and we don’t want them getting on the front roller of our mower either.
The Importance of Worms
Worms play a crucial role in the health of our bowling green. They help with thatch breakdown and contribute to the overall ecosystem of the turf. So, we don't aim to kill them off anymore. Instead, we switch as much as possible to manage their activity without harming them. This way, we maintain a healthy, balanced environment on the green.
The Switching Process
To remove dew and worm casts you can either brush the bowling green or use a dew cane-most amenity suppliers can provide you with one. However, keep in mind that the cane will need to be replaced periodically because it tends to splinter with use due to the amount of flex it goes through. But despite that, it’s a very useful tool.
When switching you move side to side as you progress across the green ensuring that you hit every worm cast and remove as much dew from the surface as possible. This ensures a nice, flat surface, perfect for both cutting and bowling.
Switching is a simple yet effective technique that plays a significant role in maintaining a high-quality bowling green. By removing dew and worm casts, we ensure a healthier turf and a better playing experience for everyone. Whether you're a groundsman or a keen bowler, understanding the importance of switching can help you appreciate the work that goes into keeping a green in top condition. So, next time you step onto the green, you’ll know exactly why it looks and plays so well.
