Sweating Out Leatherjackets on a Bowling Green

You can remove leatherjackets from your green with a process called sheeting.
  • Start by thoroughly watering the affected part of the green in the evening. Leatherjackets are closer to the surface when the soil is moist.
  • Use a large, dark tarpaulin, hessian or a light-proof sheet. The sheet traps warmth and moisture creating conditions that encourage the leatherjackets to come to the surface.

  • The sheet should remain in place overnight, usually for about 24 hours. The warmth and moisture make the leatherjackets uncomfortable, and they rise to the surface. After removing the sheet, you’ll often find the leatherjackets on the surface of the green. You can then sweep them up and dispose of them.
This method is organic and effective, particularly when used repeatedly during the leatherjackets' active periods which tend to be in the spring and autumn.
